Rosses Point 2019 Winners gallery

 Margaret Downes Salver

The Margaret Downes Salver was presented to the society by Margaret in 1984 immediately following the end of her year as President of Chartered Accountants Ireland. The bespoke Kilkenny designed silver Salver, along with the heaviest marble base you will ever come across is won each year by the Ladies best net score

Smylie Cup

The Smylie Cup dates back to 1927 when the annual outing became a two day affair for the first time. It is named after Hugh Smylie, a former chair of the Ulster Society and is awarded for the Best net score on the first day of the outing. In 2019 3 players scored 37 points and Neil Wallace won the prize on a countback, determined on the last 3 holes of the first nine, which, under R&A rules is traditionally the 6th tiebreaker used to divide level scores, a close contest indeed!

John C. Oakes was Captain of the society in 1957 and this trophy, known as the "Veteran's Cup" was presented by him for the first time in 1965 for the best net score in the over 60's category. This competition is held on Friday and the 2019 winner was Neil Gaynor, a prolific cup winner at Rosses, and a past Captain of the County Sligo Golf Club..

The Quin Cup is the oldest trophy competed for at Rosses Point and was presented by the President of Chartered Accountants Ireland in 1919, Stewart Blacker Quin for an annual competition between members which first took place in September 1920 at Royal County Down Golf Club, Newcastle. The first winner, as recorded on the trophy was W.H. Smyth. This trophy is awarded for the Best net score on Saturday, the 2nd day of the outing.

The Johnny Lillis Trophy

We are grateful to CAI and to Shane O'Mahony & John Beirne who supported the acquisition of a bronze replica of the public statue which overlooks Rosses Point harbour known as "Waiting on the Shore" in memory of our past Captain from 2007 Johnny Lillis. The trophy is awarded for the Best score over the Bomore 9 on Saturday, our newest competition at Rosses in the "Companions category"

The Bell Cup

Henry F. Bell, Captain of the society in 1962 kindly donated the cup to the society in 1964 for the Winner of the putting competition. Audaciously he won it himself in the first year so promptly took it home again. To Rosses Point golfers this is affectionately known as "Glory's last shot" or "The Desperation Cup" because it is the final competition at the end of the weekend meeting decided just before the prize giving and only those who have not won one of the other trophies may take part. In 2019. This year "big Shane" proved to be the most desperate 😜.

The Harold Winter Salver

Harold Winter, Captain of the society in 1973 kindly donated the salver in 1989 for the Best score by a newcomer. A true legend, Harold was a major character in the life of the society for more than 5 decades. He was renowned for his competitive spirit demonstrated by his famous white cap which contained the initials PIG. Harold would explain to innocent newcomers at the start of their round that the initials referred to his breakfast, where the hen has a passing interest but he was like the pig - total commitment. Peter Davis was this year's winner of perhaps the hardest trophy to win at Rosses Point - after all you only get one chance.

The Miscampbell Past Captains Trophy

23 Past Captains of the Society competed in 2019 for the Past Captains trophy which was presented in 2015 by Bill Miscampbell. Bill was Captain himself in 1991 and won his own trophy last year, his 17th "major" (the most of any golfer) in a long career at Rosses Point. Bill is most famous for being the Captain of the Ulster Lorimer trophy team for 30+ years. John Bourke, who was Captain of the society in 1982 - 37 years ago - won in 2019

The John Sedgewick

John Sedgewick, Captain 1966 presented his trophy for first play in 1989 for the Best gross score over 36 holes. Somewhat ironically for a gross prize the bronze figure is wizened and twisted in the style of a scrappy golfer, although many Rosses Pointers will testify to this as an apt description of the punishment the great links dishes out to even the most hardy of souls. It is worth studying the winners list for this competition closely - some winners of great renown have collected this trophy more than once over the years.

Jonathan McNeill successfully defended the Sedgewick in 2019

Pratt Cup - Overall Winner

The Pratt Cup was introduced in 1974 and is awarded to the overall winner of the outing with the Best Nett score over 2 days. Derrick Pratt, Captain of the Society in 1955 was instrumental in the decision to hold the annual outing in Sligo each year so that the social engagement between members was increased. The remote location meant that the golfers could not easily go back to their desks or homes after the golf but stayed in Rosses Point to make the event a more relaxing weekend. Tony Baynes from Galway won the Cup on his first appearance in the outing with scores of 37 and 41 points.
