The annual outing of the Chartered
Accountants Golf Society took place on 12 and 13 May 2023. In glorious sunshine almost
one hundred Chartered Accountants descended on the links in Rosses Point, to
enjoy a great test of golf on a demanding and beautifully presented course. Event photos can be viewed here.
On day one the highlight was the
playing of the inaugural team event. In a keenly contested competition, KPMG
emerged as overall winners, and incoming President Sinéad Donovan was on hand
to present the prize which was organised in memory of her father Cecil, a
much-cherished past member of the society.
On day two, the focus shifted to
interprovincial team golf. Connacht were bidding to retain their title for a
second year, a feat not often achieved by them in the past. Competition was
fierce. Ulster and Leinster had both swelled their ranks with young tyro’s and
Munster had brought their strongest team in many years. In the event, it was
some of the veteran members of the society who stepped up for Connacht, led
from the front by their stand in playing captain, Shane O’Mahony. The moral of
that story is that when in Rosses Point, there is no substitute for experience!
Individual scoring was strong
overall. Reflecting the welcome increasing number of women members in the
society, Louise Coffey had the best gross score over the two days. A great
achievement. Other notable performances included a very young Daniel McMahon,
who won the Smylie Cup, our President Pat O’Neill who won the Quin Cup, and
Eimear McCarthy who won the Margret Downes trophy. The overall individual event
was won by Eugene McMahon, his previous success in that category coming twenty-nine
years ago!
A wonderful event organised under the
captaincy of Shane Power. Thoughts now turn to our Centenary event, which takes
place on the 16th September 2023, also on the fabulous links
at Rosses Point.
